Tadese Teko, Washed Filter - Ethiopia

From the highlands of Gedeb comes this exceptional Grade 1 washed coffee, grown by Mr. Tadese Teko on his eight-hectare farm in Shale village, near Worka.

At around twice the local average farm size, Tadese’s land provides the primary income for his family and helps support the education of his nine children. He follows traditional highland farming practices, growing coffee beneath shade and using natural fertiliser made from farm waste, without chemical fertilisers, pesticides or fungicides.

Situated between 1,780 and 2,100 masl, the farm’s cool growing conditions encourage slow cherry maturation, helping develop the density, sweetness and complexity for which coffees from this region are renowned. Coffee grows within a diverse farming system alongside enset, avocado, cereals and native shade trees, a reflection of the deeply interconnected agricultural traditions of the Gedeo people.

Although coffees from Tadese’s area would traditionally be combined with neighbouring farmers’ deliveries at Halo Beriti, the exceptional quality of this harvest earned it the opportunity to be separated and presented under Tadese’s own name through the Single Farmer Project. 

The cherries are carefully depulped, fermented and washed before being dried on raised beds, producing the clarity and vibrant acidity associated with washed Yirgacheffe style coffees.

In the cup expect cooked cherry and candied citrus leading into mild caramel, with juicy acidity and a lingering, candy-like sweetness.
