Kavutiri, Peaberry Washed - Kenya

Built in the 1960s, Kavutiri Coffee Factory stands as one of Embu County’s oldest and most trusted coffee institutions. The factory receives coffee from 980 dedicated smallholder farmers across the Kianjokama, Runyenjes, and Manyatta regions. It is committed to producing exceptional coffee while strengthening the community behind every cup.

Kavutiri benefits from rich red volcanic soils, steady temperatures of 13–24°C, and abundant annual rainfall, natural conditions that nurture consistently vibrant, high-quality coffee cherries. With two flowering seasons and two harvests each year, Kavutiri farmers bring forth some of the most celebrated flavours Kenya has to offer.

This is a washed coffee, which is the most common method applied at the wet mill. This process requires the ripe, picked cherries to be wet-pulped and wet-fermented for 12-18 hours in concrete tanks. Followed by a thorough wash in concrete channels using clean water from the nearby River Ene. The coffee is then laid on raised beds to dry, until moisture reaches 10-12%. The drying process typically takes 12-21 days.  Beans are transported to the dry mill and stored in parchment until milled for export. During dry milling beans are separated by machine based on size with a specific category assigned to these peaberries.

Kenya is known for producing full-bodied, vibrant coffee profiles, and this coffee exemplifies that.
