High in the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, Panfilo Cruz tends a small family farm that’s been shaped by generations of hard-earned knowledge. His work leans on tradition including selective hand-picking, fully washed processing, long cool ferments suited to the mountain climate, and slow, steady drying on raised beds. It’s meticulous, patient farming, the kind you only learn by growing up in it.

Panfilo is part of the Mazateca Indigenous community and still speaks Mazateco, a thread that ties his daily work to the culture and land he’s grown up on. His approach is deliberately low-intervention and deeply respectful of place, with an emphasis on preserving the farming practices and ecological balance that his family has relied on for decades.

We want to live in a world where coffee producers, their families and communities can thrive.

Unfortunately, the history of coffee production is intertwined with that of colonialism and slavery. Even today it is not uncommon for producers and workers to be faced with poverty, food scarcity, and child labour. Modern slavery still exists within the coffee producing industry.

Coffee is traditionally sold at a price that has nothing to do with farmer's living expenses (Read: C Price) and is often below the cost of production. We don't like the idea of Wall Street influencing how much our producers get paid on a given day. Our sourcing partners always pay premium prices based on cost of production and quality; not the market price.
