Giku Hill, Washed - Burundi

This coffee has travelled a long way to reach your cup. Produced by hundreds of smallholder farmers on Giku Hill, one of the most remote coffee-growing areas in Burundi, it is processed at the Ninga Washing Station, established in 2019 by Ben and Kristy Carlson from Long Miles Coffee. 

Giku Hill borders the Kibira National Park, the country's last remaining indigenous rainforest and is home to 742 farming families, growing coffee alongside maize and beans on small family plots.

Only fully ripe cherries are selectively hand-picked before being floated and carefully hand-sorted to remove any underripe or damaged fruit. The cherries are depulped on the day of harvest and undergo 12 hours of dry fermentation, followed by 24 hours submerged in clean water to gently remove the remaining mucilage. The parchment is then washed, graded by density and dried slowly on raised African beds for 16 to 20 days, reaching a stable moisture content of approximately 10.5%. 

The extended, washed process gives this coffee real clarity, pulling out its stone fruit and orange character without losing the structure.  With a brightness and depth African coffees are known for, this coffee is brewing beautifully for both espresso and filter.
